Broadway Square Mall is going to look different once the Sears name is removed from the anchor store on the south end of the mall.

A spokesperson for Sears Holdings confirmed Thursday afternoon that the company would be closing the store and auto center located at 4701 S. Broadway in the Broadway Square Mall by mid-December. According to the statement from the Tyler Morning Telegraph, sales associates were notified on Thursday, September 13th and that the store would begin a liquidation sale on Friday, September 21st leading up to the stores closing sometime in December.

The statement from Sears Holding posted online at CBS19 says:

We are making the difficult, but necessary decision to close the Sears store and Sears Auto Center at 4701 S Broadway Ave. The store will close to the public in mid-December 2018. Until then, it will remain open for customers. The store closure was announced to associates on September 13 and the store will begin its liquidation sale on Sept 21. We have been strategically and aggressively evaluating our store space and productivity, and have accelerated the closing of unprofitable stores as previously announced. This is not an effort solely aimed at cost savings but is part of a strategy we’ have been executing against as many of our larger stores are too big for our needs. Having fewer stores – and the right format – will help us bring Sears Holdings to a size and place to meet the realities of the changing retail world. Our members and customers can also shop at our other Sears locations, which are listed at http://www.sears.com/stores.html. The number of associates is not publicly available. Those associates that are eligible will receive severance and have the opportunity to apply for open positions at area Sears or Kmart stores.

There are plans in the works to bring new retail and restaurant space to Broadway Square mall utilizing open property on the south end of the mall and re-purposing or demolishing and building new buildings where the current Sears and Sears Auto Center sit on mall property.
