(Whitehouse, Texas) - Another Super Bowl Sunday is upon us. We'll get our menus together, gather with our friends and enjoy the game, the commercials and all the fun the big game has to offer. What's cool for us in East Texas is that we'll have two players we can root for that hail from out neck of the woods.

The Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs meet for a chance to bring home arguably the biggest trophy in all of sports, the Lombardi Trophy. The Kansas City Chiefs are looking to make history by becoming the first ever NFL team to win three championships in a row. The Philadelphia Eagles are looking to win just the second championship in the team's history.

East Texans Who Have Played in the Super Bowl

East Texas athletes have had an impact on the Super Bowl since the first game in 1967. That first Super Bowl featured the Kansas City Chiefs and the Green Bay Packers. In that game, Bert Coan of Timpson played for the Kansas City Chiefs and Max McGee of Overton played for the Green Bay Packers.

Max McGee scored the first ever touchdown in Super Bowl history in the Packers 35-10 win over the Chiefs. McGee went on to win a second Super Bowl the next season.

Other East Texas Contributions to the Super Bowl

Another East Texan is part of not only Super Bowl history, but NFL history in general, Tyler's Benny Malone. He played running back for the 1972 Miami Dolphins who are still the one and only NFL team to go undefeated through the season, the playoffs and then win the Super Bowl.

Another East Texan to contribute to Super Bowl history is Aaron Ross. The Tyler native played for the New York Giants. He helped lead the Giants to a championship win over the New England Patriots who came into that game with an undefeated record.

Whitehouse Versus Groveton

Whitehouse Wildcat Patrick Mahomes will lead his Kansas City Chiefs into New Orleans this Sunday for Super Bowl 59. They will be looking to win their third championship in a row, something that has never been done in the NFL. If the Chiefs win, this will be Patrick's fourth championship since he joined the league in 2017.

Groveton Indian Lane Johnson will be in New Orleans to hopefully bring a second championship for himself and his Philadelphia Eagles. He was a part of the championship team in 2018. This will also be a rematch of Super Bowl LVII that the Chiefs won 38-35 and started this 3-peat quest.
