5 Older Streaming Sitcoms, That Are Better Than Anything New
If you are going to get some time off this Christmas holiday, you may want a chance to catch up on your favorite show. I know that Netflix is going to have the second season of The Witcher, and I can’t wait to see it. But new TV shows will only get you so far. Most of them just make eight to ten episodes a season and I can watch that in a day or two. The other problem is that most new shows are not very funny and sometimes I just need to relax and laugh at the craziness from a non-woke time. Here are my five top older sitcoms that you can watch today on streaming.
There is a reason M.A.S.H. is number one on this list. I have not found one episode that I did not like. It gets dramatic at times and will have you belly laughing at others. It is a TV show that started in 1972 and ended in 1983 with 251 episodes. It is set in the time of the Korean War and follows some crazy doctors and nurses as they live life in the war. It is on HULU right now, so if you have a subscription, check it out.
Cheers and M.A.S.H. just go together in my mind. I remember my father watching both as I was forced to go to bed as a kid and young teenager. Going from 1982 to 1993 and airing 271 episodes it is a great thrill ride. I really enjoyed the first nine seasons or so and the last episode ends exactly how a sitcom should. Cheers is set in a bar in Boston, and it very rarely leaves that one location. The great theme song gets you started, and you know it is going to be good every episode. Everyone wants to have that place where they all know your name. You can catch every episode right now on Paramount plus.
Seinfeld is a classic that I remember quoting in high school and college. It began in 1989 and ended in 1998 with 173 episodes. Seinfeld is known for being a show about nothing, but in a hilarious way. It always starts and ends with stand-up from Jerry Seinfeld himself, and most of every episode is spent in Jerry Seinfeld’s apartment. The first thing you want to ask me is how is this funny? That is a great question that is hard to answer, but it is. Check it out on Netflix.
I will have to admit, I was not a huge fan of Friends when it came out. I remember seeing an episode here and there and making fun of people who liked it. My wife decided to watch it because she had never seen it before, and now we both watch it when there is nothing else to watch. There is a lot of drama, but it is in a very funny way. The setting is six friends, three male, three female, and each episode follows them through their lives. This TV show has late 90’s and early 2000’s all throughout so if you were a kid during that time, it will bring back some memories and laughs. It is set in New York City, so the B roll shows the twin towers a lot. It started in 1994 and ended in 2004 with 235 episodes available to watch on HBO Max.
This show is a little more contemporary than the others, but it has finished its run and you cannot go wrong with The Big Bang Theory. Running from 2007 to 2019 I did not catch a single episode on its air date. I have been a cord cutter for a very long time, and I did not watch regular television when it first aired. When it started streaming on HBO Max about a year ago it was the first on my list. I admit, I have been known to be a nerd and watching them takes that to the extreme. Everyone knows people that have quirks like the guys in Big Bang Theory and it just makes it even more funny. With 280 episodes to watch you cannot go wrong watching this with your HBO Max subscription.
There are a lot of other shows that would be on a list of seven or ten, but this should get you through the Christmas holidays. If older sitcoms are not your thing, what can I say? Bah Humbug.
