5 Tornadoes In One Day? It Just Happened In The Texas Panhandle.

If you haven't noticed, the panhandle has been absolutely hammered by storms over the last few weeks. We aren't talking about that summer showers where it dumps down rain and nothing else. We're talking about severe storms that rip through and cause damage in a 5-10 minute span.

Every day for at least the last two weeks has come with several counties having severe thunderstorm warnings, or worse, tornado warnings. How do I know this? Well that fancy EAS system that makes all the loud buzzing sounds on your radio and TV comes to me email every time the machine receives an alert.

Gray County, Hemphill County, and Hutchinson County seem to get the most alerts. Sometimes they are simply severe thunderstorm watches, but I've seen a lot of warnings come through for those particular counties.

Things got wild on Sunday though. My phone was buzzing non-stop, and for good reason. The National Weather Service has now confirmed that FIVE tornadoes touched down in the panhandle area on Sunday, with a couple of those right around Lake Meredith.

While none of these were major, EF0's to be exact, it feels like this storm season has been on a different level. I don't recall seeing so many severe storms run through the region and in a string the way they have the last couple of days.

It seems more than ever, we all need to make sure we have a plan for these storms because they seem to be popping up more often and randomly at times. Amarillo Alerts is a great website to go to in order to build a plan.

We still have a month or so left of what is commonly referred to as tornado season here in Texas, and with what we've already seen, we may be in for a wild finish to it this year.
