At least five tornadoes touched down in East Texas Wednesday evening, causing damage from Mabank, to Canton, to the Winnsboro area.

The National Weather Service surveyed the damage Thursday. According to that survey, an estimated EF-2 tornado hit just east of Winnsboro. It caused damage near the intersection of County Road 4420 and County Road 4430.

Another EF-2 tornado hit in the Kemp/Mabank area in Kaufman County. This tornado had estimated winds between 125 and 130mph.

Three tornadoes hit the Canton area. An EF-2 with estimated winds between 120 and 130mph hit the Whitton area, just southwest of Canton. Two other EF-1 tornadoes hit the Canton area. All three of the tornadoes in the Canton area spawned from the same storm but produced separate tracks.

The National Weather Service is continuing to assess the damage, radar data and storm reports from Wednesday evening. When their complete report is released, we’ll be sure to let you know.

A number of other tornadoes were confirmed to have touched down in the Dallas/Fort Worth area including an EF-1 that hit in north Fort Worth, an EF-0 that struck in Krum in Denton County, an EF-0 in Saginaw in Tarrant County, and an EF-0 in Rockwall.

The storms that produced this damage come on the tail end of a stretch of weather that’s been very active and deadly across the United States. 14 days in a row, tornadoes have been reported across the U.S.
