Soon it will be against the law to wear baggy pants in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana. The Parish Council passed an ordinance Wednesday night (April 10) that makes it illegal to wear pants below the waist that expose underwear in public. In short, this whatever the police or the court determines to be too much exposed skin.

Under the new law, there would be several levels of fines and community service for violators:

  • $50 for the first offense
  • $100 for the second offense
  • $100 plus 16 hours of community service for all subsequent offenses.

There have been people on both sides of the issue putting in their two cents.  Some say it violates liberty under the 14th Amendment and that the government has no right to tell people what to wear.

Others say it's good for safety, health, peace and general welfare in the Parish.

Jerome Boykin, president of the local NAACP chapter said:

There is nothing positive about people wearing saggy pants. This is not a black issue, this is not a white issue, this is a people issue.

What do you think?
