Big Traffic Pattern Changes On The Way for Highway 59 Near Lufkin
I was driving between Lufkin and Nacogdoches over the weekend and I saw digital signs getting motorists prepared for some major traffic switches set to begin on or around March 10.
Detours Coming to Highway 59 Near Lufkin
According to the Lufkin District of the Texas Department of Transportation, these traffic changes and detours will affect those traveling on US Highway 59 from the north side of Lufkin to Farm to Market Road 2021.
Starting Sunday, March 10, crews will begin work to replace a culvert beneath Highway 59, just south of FM 2021. As a result, traffic will be shifted from northbound lanes to form a two-lane traffic pattern in the southbound lanes, forming one lane for traffic in each direction.
Time Line of Traffic Switch Detour
That construction and resulting detour should take approximately a week to complete, then, it's time for the other side. Once work on the northbound side has been completed, traffic will be switched to southbound lanes, again forming two lanes of traffic, forming one lane of traffic in each direction.

Weather permitting, work should be completed on both sides of Highway 59 in about two weeks.
Motorists should be on the lookout for warning signs as well as construction personnel who will be guiding traffic through the detours. Please reduce your speed and remember that traffic fines double in work zone areas.
The Latest on the Highway 59 Project North of Lufkin
This work is all part of the project to bring that 2.45 miles of Highway 59 from non-freeway to freeway standards. The estimated completion date is December 2025. The cost of the project is expected to top $28 million.
