Halloween can be one of the more dangerous nights of the year for kids - oftentimes police and other safety institutions recommend accompanying your children while trick-or-treating. As we head into the weekend before Halloween, the Texas Department of Public Safety would like parents to take security and safety seriously while trick-or-treating with your children.

Here is a quick reminder for parents while making their rounds for candy through our local neighborhoods: visit the Texas Public Sex Offenders Registry. The website provides an open-to-the-public map of sex offenders who might be residing in your neighborhood. If you visit the registry, you can plug in a specific address for a visual representation of offenders in the area with ‘L’ standing for low risk, ‘M’ for medium, and ‘H’ for high risk.

We're not saying every sex offender is dangerous to your child, but maybe knowing this information will give you peace of mind or convince you to join in on the trick-or-treating this season.

Also, parents can use the free DPS mobile app on your electronic devices. The app provides an interactive and easy-to-use map displaying their name, location, route, and proximity.  You can download the app now at the Apple Store or Google Play Store.

Here are some other Halloween safety tips for you to keep in mind:

  • Look both ways before crossing roadways, and always walk; don't run.
  • Cross the roadway at intersections and crosswalks.
  • Travel in groups with adult supervision.
  • Do not enter the cars or homes of strangers, and avoid homes without visible porch lights.
  • Make sure children know their home phone number and how to call 911 or their local emergency number in case they have an emergency or get lost.
  • Take all treats home for an adult to inspect before eating anything, and never eat unwrapped candy.

Happy and safe Halloween, y'all!
