Early Arbor Day Event Is Saturday In Tyler, Texas; Planting 120 Trees
Arbor Day is being celebrated early in the City of Tyler, Texas this year. Normally observed on the last Friday in April, Arbor Day is celebrated on the first Friday of November in Texas and other times in a few other states. While that was just a few months ago, the Tyler Trees Committee and the City Of Tyler Urban Forestry Division are hosting a special event this Saturday.
This special event will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday (January 21st) at Fun Forest Park in Tyler.
What Is Arbor Day?
It's a celebration of trees and life. The first Arbor Day was celebrated on April 10, 1872, in Nebraska. As settlers moved to Nebraska there was a lack of trees for windbreaks and to protect the fields. So the Secretary of the Nebraska Territory encouraged all those in the area to plant trees on this specific day. It's estimated about a million trees were planted in Nebraska on that day alone and it has continued since and grown into an international day.
Now Arbor Day is focusing on hope for the future.
The simple act of planting a tree represents a belief that the tree will grow to provide us with clean air and water, cooling shade, habitat for wildlife, healthier communities, and endless natural beauty — all for a better tomorrow.
