All eyes were on the chunky rodent from Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania this morning to see if the nation was going to endure six more weeks of winter or welcome in an early spring!

Punxsutawney Phil was awakened from his tree-trunk cage this morning by the tapping of a cane on his door. After rustling around he came out to his tree trunk to see if his shadow would be cast or not, but not before trying to escape from his handlers, who quickly wrangled him back on the trunk. Once settled in, Phil did not see his shadow. So as the legend goes, spring should arrive early for us!

Of course this is all in fun as there is no way a rodent can predict what our weather will be like. According the to the USA Today, Phil has seen his shadow 102 times, no shadow now 18 times and there were 10 times where it wasn't recorded in the past 130 years. The article goes on to say,

Since 1988, the groundhog was "right" 13 times and "wrong" 15 times."

Of course Punxsutwaney Phil isn't the only predictor we have on Groundhog Day, there's animals predicting our weather in West Virginia, Georgia, Ohio, North Carolina, Louisiana and Alabama. We can't forget about our neighbors to the north in Canada, their Shubenacadie Sam, woke up to bright sunshine and saw his shadow so they are expected to experience winter for another six weeks.

No matter what the animals say, Mother Nature will always bring on Spring when she's ready!
