In his first few hours as President, Trump signed an executive order requiring the federal government to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America- but Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has a better idea of what to name it.

In case you've missed it, for awhile now, President Trump has been promising that a name change would soon come for the body of water.

What is the Gulf of Mexico?

The Gulf of Mexico is a large oceanic basin located in the southeastern region of North America, bordered by the United States (to the north and east), Mexico (to the west and south), and Cuba (to the southeast). It is part of the Atlantic Ocean and is connected to it via the Straits of Florida and the Caribbean Sea through the Yucatán Channel.

But not so fast, says Texas Gov. Abbott, if we're going to be giving it a name change, then it should instead be named something with a Lone Star flair.

Sharing a photo on X, Gov. Abbott sent this out:

I have to say, I agree with Gov. Abbott! If we're going to be renaming it, make it the Gulf of Texas!

I'm not too sure how those on the coastline Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida feel about calling it the Gulf of Texas, but if the President can proclaim a name change, I don't see why Texans can't do the same.

But who is in charge of the name change? That's a job for the Board on Geographic Names who has the power to rename geographical places within the United States.

For now, we'll wait to see if how long the change will take. If you call it the Gulf of America that's alright, I guess- but I'll be calling it the Gulf of Texas.
