How well do you actually know your neighbors? How well do you actually know the Tyler Police officers or your town's local officers that patrol your neighborhood? If you're like most neighbors you don't know them all, you can change that though on Tuesday, October 4th.

When you host a simple block party on National Night Out you can make your community safer and to be a more caring place to live.

National Night Out is typically held on the first Tuesday in August across the nation, but seeing how it's usually hovering around one hundred degrees here in East Texas that date has been shifted to a more comfortable date. This year's National Night Out event in Tyler will be held on Tuesday, October 4th. The Tyler Police Department would like to be a part of your neighborhood gathering.

Tyler Police would like to strengthen the relationship between neighbors, neighborhoods, and law enforcement to create a true sense of community. By registering your block party, patrol officers from your area will stop by and introduce themselves and get to know you and your neighbors where you can talk about issues that may be affecting your neighborhood.

National Night Out has been happening each year since it was introduced in 1984.

Your neighborhood gathering can be as simple as an informal gathering of neighbors or be as elaborate as you can imagine with grills, food, kid activities, parades, safety demonstrations from first responders, and more. As long as you make it about community and an opportunity for neighbors to get to know neighbors. If you do organize a neighborhood event, please let the police department know so they can make sure to make an appearance.

Texas has more than 325 cities participating in a National Night Out event, included are:

  • Longview
  • Van
  • Kilgore
  • Jefferson
  • Henderson
  • Hawkins
  • Bullard
  • Gilmer
  • Grand Saline
  • Marshall
  • Big Sandy
  • Emory

Check with your local law enforcement office and see if National Night Out is going to be observed on Tuesday, October 4th as well. Participate, host a party and get to know your neighbors.
