On Sunday, Oct. 9 at 6 p.m., Liberty Hall will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by partnering with John Soules Food and the Hispanic Professionals Association of Tyler (HPAT) to show the film “Selena.”

1997’s Selena, starring Jennifer Lopez and Edward James Olmos, recounts the true story of Selena Quintanilla-Perez, a Texas-born Tejano singer who rose from cult status to performing at the Astrodome, as well as having chart topping albums on the Latin music charts.

In March of 1995, Selena was gunned down by the President of her fan club, stealing this beautiful talent from the world. This event will be a “sing along with Selena” to remember her life and the impact she made to the Hispanic music genre.

HPAT has collaborated with community partners to create events that celebrate Hispanic Heritage and is also highlighting events that celebrate Hispanic culture during this month of commemoration.

The Library of Congress provides a history and purpose for this celebration, “Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover the 30-day period. It was enacted into law on Aug. 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402. The day of Sept. 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for the Latin American countries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.

In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is Oct. 12, falls within this 30-day period.”

Tickets are $7 and can be purchased online or at the door forty-five minutes prior to the show. For more information, go to www.libertytyler.com.
