Jury Selection for Michael Jackson’s Wrongful Death Trial Begins in Los Angeles
Jury selection in the Michael Jackson wrongful-death trial begins today (April 2) in Los Angeles. The case stems from the late singer's mother, Katherine Jackson, who is suing the concert promoter AEG Live for negligence.
According to Rolling Stone, Katherine claims in her lawsuit that AEG was culpable in the death of her son on June 25, 2009. The family matriarch blames AEG for hiring Dr. Conrad Murray, who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter after he injected Jackson with a dose of powerful anesthetics that resulted in the pop singer's death. They are seeking $40 billion in damages.
The trial is expected to last several months and Michael's two oldest children, his son Prince Michael and his daughter Paris, are expected to appear.
AEG Live unsuccessfully tried to have the case dismissed, claiming that Dr. Murray was employed by Jackson and not by them. But Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Yvette Plazuelos ruled that the Jackson Family had enough evidence to support their wrongful-death case.
