Morgan Freeman's granddaughter by marriage was found by police early Sunday morning (August 16), dead from multiple stab wounds.

E’Dena Hines was discovered on the street near her apartment in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan, according to the Washington Post. The NYPD say they were called to the scene, where they found a man described as Hines' boyfriend standing over her body. The man, described as an aspiring rapper, was standing over Hines shouting Bible verses and what one witness described as exorcism incantations.

“I heard the him say something like ‘Devil, be gone, Jesus and God,'” a local resident named George Hudacko CBS News. “I said, ‘Uh oh.'"

Authorities moved Hines to Harlem Hospital Center, where she was pronounced dead, the Post reports. Hines' boyfriend, Lamar Davenport, was taken to a nearby hospital for psychological evaluation. He was also charged with second-degree murder.

Freeman was once married to Hines' grandmother. An actress herself, Hines accompanied Freeman to the 2005 Golden Globes and had a small role in Freeman's 2014 film 5 Flights Up. She had also just finished shooting a larger role in an independent film, Landing Up.

The actor said in a statement, “The world will never know her artistry and talent, and how much she had to offer." Freeman continued, “Her friends and family were fortunate enough to have known what she meant as a person. Her star will continue to shine bright in our hearts, thoughts and prayers. May she rest in peace.”
