(Mix 93-1)  Now that the calendar has flipped to May, Texans need to beware because it's about time for the state's deadliest creature to emerge and infect the population, and unfortunately, kill some Texans.

East Texas has received its fair share of rain over the past few days, causing some flooding issues. With so much rain, there is going to be a lot of standing water. Couple that with warmer temperatures and humidity, and it's going to be the perfect breeding ground for a killer.

Texas's number one insect killer - the mosquito (Google)

Before this week's rain arrived, I received several calls from local pest control providers letting me know that my 'neighbors' had signed up for mosquito control and said they were going to be in the neighborhood and wanted to know if I was interested.

I declined their offer.  So far this year and in previous years, I have not had an issue with mosquitoes at my house. That could change, though, if we get a lot more rain and there's standing water around my neighbors' homes.

Ways to keep the mosquitoes away:

  • Wear a mosquito repellent that's recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants to limit exposed skin susceptible to bites.
  • Remove areas of standing water, such as dog bowls, bird baths, and garbage cans, as mosquitos can use these areas to breed.
  • Keep your lawn and gutters clean.
  • Call a professional service to assist in control efforts.

According to experts, the lighter the color the less likely you are to attract mosquitoes. However, your blood type, sweat, and CO2 (carbon dioxide) output will come into play too.
