Real-Life Lufkin Termite Swarm Horror Stories
A termite swarm has been sighted in Lufkin. Last week, Cary Sims, our County Extension Agent for agriculture and natural resources for Angelina County, got a concerning call from a Lufkin resident.
She was asking him what termites looked like. She found many small flying insects around her front door and could not identify them.

They were later identified as termites.

Mr. Sims also recounted seeing several small winged insects piled up on the wiper blades on the windshield of his truck, and they were also termites.
How To Spot A Termite Swarm In Lufkin
In a recent City of Lufkin social media post, Mr. Sims outlined how to identify a termite yourself. In the spring, termites can swarm during the day to form new colonies.

They are dark brown to black, about 3/8 of an inch long, and may or may not have wings. You might think they are ants, but termites lack a pinched middle, and are shaped more like a grain of rice than their very segmented cousins.
Termite wings are all the same size, and ants have a longer front pair compared to the back. Though termite swarmers can just come inside your house, if you see them, it's a good bet you have an infestation.
How To Prevent Termites In Your Lufkin Area Home
Termites love wood, as we all know. Keeping old mulch, a stump, or plywood lying around outside is a good way to attract them.
Once they are in the yard, it's only a hop, skip, and a jump to your house. Keep your yard free of wood debris, especially near the foundation of your home.
If you think you have termites, have your home inspected and treated by a professional immediately.
