If studies show that spanking just makes children more aggressive and ultimately makes our children not as smart as their peers why do we do it?

I caught the new ABC show Black-ish last night for the very first time and it was the content in the show that caught my attention and made me watch the show. The parents were debating whether or not to spank their youngest child because he kept playing hide and seek from them after being told not to run away or hide from them in public.

A video in the process of going viral online shows an angry stepfather violently spanking — yes, spanking — a 27-year-old man who apparently was caught having sex with the father’s underage daughter.

Back in the ’60s, corporal punishment was common practice for a shocking 94 percent of parents in the US. While a lot of us may find this number unsettling, just as many don’t. In fact, half of all parents today admitted to punishing children by “spanking on the bottom with a bare hand” to a telephone poll conducted by the National Institutes for Mental Health.
