Texas Basketball Player Facing Death Penalty in Indonesia Over Edibles
(KNUE-FM) When you break the law in Texas there are consequences for your actions, and one professional athlete from Texas is learning that Indonesia is the same way.
According to NBCDFW, a professional basketball player from Dallas is now facing the death penalty over alleged drug smuggling.
Who Was Arrested in Indonesia?
Indonesia is very strict when it comes to drug laws, previously some drug dealers convicted of their crimes have faced execution by a firing squad.
The Texas athlete that has been arrested is 34-year-old Jarred Dwayne Shaw.
Shaw has been playing in the Indonesia Basketball League since 2022 and was signed with the Tangerang Hawk prior to his arrest.
He has been fired since being arrested, according to the Tangerang Hawks’ manager.

What Happened to Get This Texas Athlete Arrested?
Law enforcement got a tip that Shaw received a suspicious package from Thailand where cannabis has been decriminalized.
The police raid took place on May 7, 2025, where 132 pieces of cannabis candy were confiscated.
Under Indonesia’s anti-drug laws, Shaw is now facing up to life in prison or the death penalty if found guilty.
The total weight of the edibles was 869 grams or 30.6 ounces of illegal cannabinoids.
@treasuredknowledge22 I'm 100% certain he was told about Indonesia's very strict laws against drugs and drug smuggling before he went there. #treasuredknowledge22 #jarredshaw #indenesia #basketball #fyp ♬ original sound - Treasured knowledge
Very Harsh Penalty
Beyond his legal trouble, Shaw has already been banned for life from playing in the Indonesia Basketball League.
While Indonesia has harsh drug laws it remains a drug-smuggling hub due to drug dealers targeting its young population.
July of 2016 is the last time foreigners were executed for drug crimes in Indonesia; three Nigerians and one Indonesian were all sentenced to death by a firing squad.
