Texas Owes You Money: Are You on the $10B List?
Monday night’s Powerball jackpot was an estimated 1.6 billion dollars, but the odds of winning are 1 in 292 million. Your odds of having a portion of the over 10 billion dollars' worth of unclaimed property in Texas are much better!
Unclaimed Assets
Instead of buying that Powerball ticket, you might want to check with the state of Texas to see if you are the owner of an unclaimed asset. According to KCEN, the asset could be uncashed checks, insurance payments, old bank account balances, utility deposits and mineral royalties.Unclaimed property does not include real estate or vehicles.
There is also no statute of limitations for unclaimed property. The reported funds remain with the state until they are returned to the owner.
How To Check for Funds
The process is simple. I put my name in to test the process and found that a relative was owed over $900. Go to the ClaimItTexas.gov website and enter your first and last name along with your zip code. If the state has money for you, it will show your name and the amount. In some instances, it will say where the money originated. The search is absolutely free. Any questions can be answered by calling the Comptroller’s Unclaimed Property Division at 800-321-2274 (CASH) or by going to the website at ClaimItTexas.gov.
Scam Alert
There are many websites online offering to find unclaimed money. Never give your personal information to anyone texting or calling you on the phone. The Texas Comptroller’s Office says it will never text or call requesting your online banking credentials, your access code or any other identifiable information.
