These Cities are the Most Mispronounced by Texas Tourist
Texas has a ton of cities within its borders. Over 1,200 incorporated cities to be exact, according to the Texas Comptroller.
Each city in Texas is unique in its own way, all the way down to their names. Places often get their names from something in the area, historic moments, founding people/families, historical figures, and more.
Many of these cities' names are easily pronounceable with some thought. However, others can be very confusing -- with letters making sounds they seemingly shouldn't, and pronunciations that seem to belong to entirely different spellings.
Many Texas city names are especially hard for visitors to grasp
It comes as no surprise that visitors to Texas could have some difficulty pronouncing some cities in the great state. After all, they did not grow up in Texas hearing many of the city names on repeat.
For example, for Texans Llano probably seems like a very easy name to pronounce. But According to the Austin American-Statesman, it can be a difficult town to get right, especially for out-of-towners who may believe the double 'll' to be pronounced as a 'y' like it is in Spanish. This is a fair assumption considering the Latin influence in Texas. However, we Texans say it as, "LAN-oh."
And as much as they'd hate to admit it, many Texans will have issues pronouncing every city in the state correctly as well.
These are the most mispronounced cities in Texas
The Austin American-Statesman compiled a list of 21 cities people often say incorrectly, and yes, that includes some Texans.
To be honest, I thought I'd get each of the cities' names right on the first try, but there were several that took me back. Check out the most mispronounced cities and the proper way to say them here:
