District of Doom

Eight teams make up District 27-A. Four of those teams are currently ranked in the TABC Hoops Top 25. When half of the teams in your district are ranked that high, you've got a very tough conference.

Centerville (19-3, 5-0): The Bulldogs are ranked sixth in the state in Class A and are the only undefeated team in their district.

UIL Basketball Playoffs Are Different This Year

There will be a total of 12 state champions this year -- 2 each in each conference 1A through 6A.

The top four finishers from every district will advance to the playoffs. The two schools with the highest enrollments will move into the Division 1 playoffs, while the other two will advance into the Division 2 playoffs.

No disrespect intended for the other teams of District 27-A, but it looks like the four teams mentioned above have the best shots at making the playoffs.

Enrollment Numbers

The UIL enrollment numbers for those four teams are Centerville (45), Broaddus (101.5), Kennard (73), and Wells (79).

That would mean that Centerville and Kennard would be heading to the Division 2 playoffs (probably with Centerville as the 1 seed), and Broaddus and Wells heading to Division 1 (seeding still too early to call)

Regardless, the teams from District 28-A are going to have their hands full in the first round of the playoffs.

Playoffs - District 27 vs District 28

The Brookeland Wildcats have once again reloaded and they looked destined for another district championship. They are ranked #4 in the state in Class A.

With a reported enrollment of 98, it also looks like they will be heading for the Division 1 playoffs of Class A. This means a showdown with Wells or Broaddus seems to be looming for their first round of the playoffs.

While that will be a fun game to watch, it's a shame that one of those teams, that could easily make a deep run toward a state title, will be ousted in the bi-district round.

Another District of Doom

Just a quick side note about District 19-5A in southeast Texas. This district features four teams ranked in the state's top 25: Beaumont West Brook (#4), Beaumont United (#7), Port Arthur Memorial (#16), and Barbers Hill (#25).

This is the same district in which Lufkin plays football. However, the Panthers do not play basketball in that district. If they did, Lufkin, who is ranked #12 in the state, would be the fifth team from that district to be in the top 25.
