No matter where you go it seems as if the traffic situation is getting worse and there seems to be no relief in sight. With our congested roads, comes impatience, frayed nerves and general dislike for other drivers around us!

No one is invincible to a traffic accident, it can happen to any of us at any time. One major accident could be life changing for one person or all involved. With so much happening while we drive, it's easy to see why our roads have become more dangerous than ever before. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Highway Loss Data Institute, in 2016 there were a total of 37,461 deaths on U.S. roadways and the trend doesn't appear to be going down this year.

The Car Insurance Comparison website recently compiled a ton of data from all across the nation and came up with a ranking of which states have the worst drivers and unfortunately Texas and Louisiana don't rank well. The site looked at the following factors when crunching their numbers:

  • Fatality rate in crashes
  • Failure to obey
  • Drunk driving
  • Speeding
  • Careless driving

Looking back at their reports for the last six years, our two states don't appear to be getting any better. Texas and Louisiana keep bouncing around from the worst state to number 5. When it comes to states with the worst drivers for 2017, Car Insurance Comparison lists Texas as 4th, while Louisiana comes in 3rd.

The biggest issue for the state of Texas, according to the sites methodology, is drunk driving. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were more than 1500 fatal crashes involving impaired driving.

Louisiana placed 3rd on the list because drivers 'failed to obey'. This could be something as small as not having a valid license, to not buckling up or failure to obey traffic devices. All of these things have lead to deaths on Louisiana roads.

As Car Insurance Comparison says,

These aren’t just numbers. These were peoples’ lives cut short. This data isn’t here to entertain, it’s purpose is to motivate change."

You have to be the one willing to make a change in your driving habits. Put down the phone, don't drink and drive, obey posted traffic signs, be an example and keep an eye out on your driving environment.
