Tyler & Gilmer Fire Department Patches In Creede, CO

While on vacation this summer in Creede, CO my family and I visited the world's only underground firehouse. This was a rather interesting place to visit not only because of the facilities unique characteristics but also because my grandfather is a retired Dallas firefighter and it really interested me!

The weekend of our visit, all of the fire equipment had been removed for a wood carvers show, but we still got to tour the facility which was created blasting it out of the side of a mountain. This happens to be the world's only underground firehouse and the firehouse itself resembles an inverted tree! 'Branches' were blasted out from the main tunnel so that the firetrucks and equipment could be easily accessible.

This is a very unique firehouse that offered up something else unique, a wall of fire department patches. This display was very interesting to me because it demonstrated the strong bond and brotherhood that exists between firemen and fire departments not only within the state of Colorado, but the U.S. and beyond. The display started out with one fireman exchanging patches between each other in Creede and it took off from there. While looking through the hundreds of patches, I saw one from Tyler another from Gilmer and many more from the state of Texas and one from Shreveport too!

So, if you're ever in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado and happen to pass through Creede, CO on the Silver Thread Scenic Byway on CO 149, take a little time and head north of town and check out this awesome and unique little firehouse!
