Ever wonder why bars are always dark with no windows to this day? It takes a long time to change things and even then we romanticize the past.

When Prohibition started over 100 years ago hidden juice joints were a necessity, and are now becoming destinations. Some of these places are real holes in the wall; others are on the actual sites of speakeasies, and most are just hidden bar concepts.

We will start with the one that I have been to many times in Austin. This place still holds a special place in my heart.

1. Firehouse Lounge - Austin, Texas

The Firehouse Lounge has the coolest entrance, especially if you are into books. The front is actually the lobby for a hostel. If you like Moscow mules, they have the best.

2. AKAI - Dallas, Texas

This hidden Japanese lounge is always hopping and locals and non-locals alike really enjoy the atmosphere. This is a fancy, high-end place so be prepared to make a reservation.

3. Sidebar 215 - Edinburg, Texas

There are so many cool things about this bar, and it really has a lot of charm. It is hidden inside the Puig Business Center. It brings those 20's vibes with real prohibition-style craft cocktails.

4. Base - Houston, Texas

The BASE billionaire's basement is just so typical of Houston. Even their speakeasy is loud and full of lights. This place is all about the bottle service, so bring a wad of cash.

5. Bodega West 7th - Fort Worth, Texas

If you take an unsuspecting friend to Bodega, they will actually think they are at a convenience store. The front of this one is a working grocery store, and the things inside are actually for sale. The line out front might tip them off, so get there early.
