‘Walter’ is an Odd Indie Film with Heart
I watched the oddest indie film last night, and haven't been able to get it out of my head all day. Have you seen Walter?
If you've seen the 2015 film Walter, then maybe you found it swimming around in your head a day later as well. The film's titular character thinks he's the son of God and it's his job to determine who goes to heaven and who goes to hell.
He also has a day job. He's a ticket-taker at a movie theater with a crush on the girl who works in concession. As a former movie theater employee, the dynamic between these characters was reminiscent of my own experiences.
Walter's quirky personality keeps most people from getting close to him, and his mother is a strange bird as well. Let's just say she cooks a lot of eggs.
The cast is an interesting one. The characters who have the most screen time are young and have a few credits under their belt, but they're supported by much bigger names.
William H. Macy portrays a therapist. You see Neve Campbell in a small, but very important role, Virginia Madsen is Walter's mother and Peter Facinelli has a compelling part to play as well.
The film's plot is not immediately evident, and the story line develops and unfolds in unexpected ways. I was confused by it, and then ultimately enjoyed it. In fact, I'll probably watch it again to better understand how the story played out.
Wondering if you'll like it, too? Here's my short take. If you're a fan of independent films with intriguing psychological stories, then give it a shot. If you're into big blockbuster films, with lots of action and gunfire then this is probably not the film for you.
