‘Wolverine’ Sequel Confirms Aiming for R Rating, But Not Because of ‘Deadpool’

Following the record-breaking success of Deadpool, a rumor emerged that Fox was targeting an R rating for their sequel to The Wolverine, which would give Hugh Jackman’s mutant hero a proper, brutal sendoff. That rumor appears to be true, as a new report confirms that Fox is indeed aiming for an R, but it has nothing to do with Deadpool — allegedly.

THR reports that Fox and director James Mangold had always planned for The Wolverine 2 to have an R rating, as hinted in the first teaser image posted by Hugh Jackman:

Sure, a PG-13 Wolverine sequel could get away with some profanity and at least one F-bomb (see also: Matthew Vaughn’s brilliant use of his one allotted F-word in X-Men: First Class), but why worry about those limitations when you could just go for the full R? Besides, Jackman has been talking up the possibility of an R-rated Wolverine movie since 2011. Here’s what he told MTV:

There’s such great temptation to make an R-rated ’Wolverine.’ I’ve always felt that, and I know a lot of fans would like that. If there’s ever going to be a superhero that is going to be R-rated, it’s going to be Wolverine.

Mangold will begin shooting the sequel next month, which serves as Jackman’s final big screen outing as the famous X-Men character. As teased during Comic-Con last summer, the film is based — in some part — on Mark Millar’s Old Man Logan comic book arc, and while Fox won’t be able to negotiate the rights to certain Marvel Studios characters, there’s plenty of inspiration to be found in the tale of an older, grittier and retired Logan.

And although The Wolverine 2 was always intended as an R-rated affair, surely Deadpool’s success helped seal the deal. A new Wolverine movie, regardless of rating, is pretty much guaranteed to slay at the box office, while Deadpool had a much higher degree of risk.

In any case, the untitled Wolverine sequel hits theaters on March 3, 2017.
