Sandy Hook Survivors Record Song for Charity [VIDEO]

youtube

While the tragedy of Sandy Hook elementary shook the nation to its core, there is no way to imagine what the students who survived are feeling. It’s hard to find words to describe what they are going through. Instead of finding words to help, they used music. You’re going to want to have a box of tissues handy.

20 students at Sandy Hook Elementary teamed up with their music teacher and folk singer Ingrid Michaelson to record a special rendition of “Over The Rainbow”. The song which is available on iTunes and Amazon will give the proceeds to a local United Way and the Newtown Youth Academy.

In a segment on Good Morning America, you got an inside look at these children, hat include current and former students, and the process that this came together. One child said she became part of the song because she simply wanted to help. Ten year old Kayla Verga said she became a part of it because of her friend six year old Jessica Rekos, who was shot during the massacre.

“Singing the song makes me feel like she’s with me and she’s beside me, singing along with me,” Kayla told GMA.

One of the most inspirational and heartwarming quotes came from ten year old Jane Shearin.

“I really want to be kind to the people who have lost their loved ones and help them to recover from their sorrow,” she said, adding that she hoped “someday our world will be peaceful and loving, no violence at all.”

To these kids it isn’t about being on TV, or singing with a superstar. It truly is their way of reaching out and lifting up those around them. And after the tragedy they experienced, for them to be making such a huge difference such as this is truly inspirational. These children didn’t have someone tell them to do it, they wanted to do it.

Let’s make ‘Over The Rainbow’ by The Children of Newtown number one on the charts. Click the designated link to download on iTunes and Amazon.
