Tyler, Texas has a lot going for it - outstanding restaurants, great housing, low crime rate, great healthcare, and outdoor activities - but there is one thing that citizens of the heart of East Texas complain about and that's traffic. For a city of this size, congestion is becoming quite an issue and a hot topic for commuters.

At times it feels like we could be driving in Dallas or Houston traffic. At least those cities have overpasses and freeway systems to keep things moving. Even similarly sized cities in East Texas, like Lufkin and Texarkana, have overpasses at major intersections. This is something Tyler is lacking. One thing Tyler isn't lacking is the number of traffic signals!

The Tyler City Council is working to address the issues.

The City Council approved a measure to have 18 signalized intersections within the city retimed. This is something the city did in the fall of 2022. They retimed 19 signals along S. Broadway from Troup Hwy. to Front St. along Front St. and Fourth and Fifth Streets. Now they're going to work on the timing of signals along WNW to WSW Loop 323 and down Old Jacksonville Hwy.

The council approved a $121,085 engineering contract for the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Master Plan Year 3 - Traffic Signal Retiming improvements. The intersections that will be retimed are:

  • West Northwest Loop 323 at U.S. Highway 69 North
  • West Northwest Loop 323 at Silver Creek Drive/Charlotte Drive
  • North Northwest Loop 323 at Texas Highway 110 North/Van Highway
  • North Northwest Loop 323 at Lion Lane
  • North Northwest Loop 323 at Texas Highway 64 West/West Erwin Street
  • South Southwest Loop 323 at Texas Highway 31/Chandler Highway
  • South Southwest Loop 323 at West Shaw Street
  • South Southwest Loop 323 at Robertson Road
  • South Southwest Loop 323 at Earl Campbell Parkway
  • South Southwest Loop 323 at Briarwood Road
  • South Southwest Loop 323 at Spur 364/Towne Park Drive
  • South Southwest Loop 323 at Texas Highway 155/Frankston Highway
  • West Southwest Loop 323 at FM 2493/Old Jacksonville Highway
  • West Southwest Loop 323 at Kinsey Drive
  • FM 2493/Old Jacksonville Highway at Rice Road
  • FM 2493/Old Jacksonville Highway at Texas Highway 57/West Grande Boulevard
  • FM 2493/Old Jacksonville Highway at Three Lakes Parkway
  • FM 2493/Old Jacksonville Highway at West Cumberland Road

The project will include data collection, development of timing plans, implementation, management, and a final report. Traffic counts will begin by the end of April and the retiming of these 18 intersections is expected to be completed by October 2023.

So far the City Of Tyler has had 53 of the 149 signalized intersections retimed as part of the ITS Master Plan. Year 1 actions. Year 2 actions.
