‘Three Billboards,’ ‘This Is Us,’ and ‘Big Little Lies’ Win Big at the 2018 SAG Awards
The Screen Actors Guild Awards winners are in, so you can go ahead and throw out last week’s Oscar predictions; or, perhaps not. The first of the major guilds to hand out statuettes this season, the SAG Awards often give us a better idea of what to expect come Oscar night. But while you may have expected some curve balls, tonight’s acting awards only further solidified what many of us have been predicting so far, with little to no surprises.
The big winner at Sunday night’s awards, hosted by Kristen Bell, was Martin McDonagh’s rage-fest Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, winning in all three categories it was nominated in. The film won the ensemble cast award, while unsurprisingly sending Frances McDormand and supporting co-star Sam Rockwell home with two (well-deserved) awards.
Gary Oldman continued his frontrunner streak, taking home another Best Actor prize for his Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour. And Allison Janney once again bested Laurie Metcalf for Best Supporting Actress, winning for her blistering performance in I, Tonya. If you didn’t already expect McDormand, Oldman, Janney, and Rockwell to be your Oscar acting frontrunners, tonight’s SAG Awards more than secures it. All four actors have gone undefeated at the major awards so far this season, all earning the Critics Choice, Golden Globe, and SAG in their respective categories. As Erik Anderson of Awards Watch noted on Twitter, if all four go on to win the BAFTA and Oscar, it’ll be the first time in awards history.
But some history was already made tonight on the SAG stage. In the TV category, This Is Us star Sterling K. Brown became the first black actor to win the SAG for Best Male Actor in a Drama Series. Nicole Kidman, who has been nominated for seven individual SAG awards and three ensembles, won her very first SAG tonight, recognized for her powerful work in HBO’s Big Little Lies. Claire Foy surprisingly bested Elisabeth Moss for Best Actress in a Drama for The Crown.
