A Statewide Disaster Declaration Was Issued To Texas Amid Violent Protests
The death of Texas native George Floyd, Breanna Taylor in Kentucky, and Ahmaud Arbury in Georgia have caused protests and demonstrations that lead to rioting and looting across the country and affected us here in Texas.
Communities in Tyler, Longview, Texarkana, Dallas, and even in Austin has come together to address the problem of police brutality and while we are exercising out First Amendment rights Governor Greg Abbott wants us keep our demonstrations peaceful.
Today (May 31st) Gov Abbott issued a statewide State of Disaster Declaration for Texas in response to the violent protests.
Governor Abbott, said in the declaration,
Every Texan and every American has the right to protest and I encourage all Texans to exercise their First Amendment rights. However, violence against others and the destruction of property is unacceptable and counterproductive. As protests have turned violent in various areas across the state, it is crucial that we maintain order, uphold public safety, and protect against property damage or loss.
I ask of you who are frustrated like me to let cooler heads prevail! Rioting and looting is not the answer and I ask if you are to protest and demonstrate to please do it peacefully.
We will get through this together.
