In a Press Release released on Wednesday (June 10th) they announced changes that will affect the landscape and ensure GRAMMY Awards nominating process and rules will be more transparent and fair.

One of the changes will be affect the R&B world as Best Urban Contemporary Album Category will now be named Best Progressive R&B album.

The reason for this change is because the use of the word "Urban" has been criticized for being inappropriate and a synonym for black music which will include a more accurate definition to describe the merit or characteristics of music compositions of performances themselves within the genre of R&B.

Chairman and Interim President/CEO Harvey Mason Jr. said in a statement

The Academy accepts proposals for rule changes from members of the music community throughout the year that are carefully reviewed and, if accepted, ultimately ratified at our annual Board meeting, a process that we are proud to have continued in this challenging year.

The term urban will remain in the GRAMMY'S, however, with the Latin Pop album category being changed to Latin Pop or Urban Album.

We will check out the new look GRAMMY Awards when they air January 31, 2021.
