Getting rid of paint, stain and varnish isn't the easiest thing to do. If done improperly it could pose a big environmental problem. There's an easy way to recycle any unused paint that you have stored away in your garage or storage building this Saturday (May 21st), through the City of Tyler's Paint Recycling and Collection Day.

Keep Tyler Beautiful and the Tyler Solid Waste Department will be accepting unwanted paint cans and bucket from Tyler residents at the Solid Waste employee parking lot Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 noon in the 300 block of N. Bois D'Arc Avenue in Tyler. You may recycle up to 25 gallons of oil based or latex paint per household by showing a current water bill or valid driver's license to show proof of residency. Keep Tyler Beautiful Board Chair Sarah Wruck says,

"This is a great opportunity for City of Tyler residents to dispose of paint in an environmentally-friendly manner. It really is a great chance to get rid of any leftover paint that is just sitting around in your garage or storage room."

While transporting unwanted paint to the recycling center be aware of these safety tips:

  • Bring paint in its original container with a label, if possible
  • Containers should be sealed to avoid leaking or spilling in your car
  • If a container leaks, place it in a larger container and use an oil absorbing product such as Oil Dry or cat litter to soak up spill

The Recycling Center will also be open and collecting recyclables like glass, e-scrap and paper as they do six days out of the week!
