Fair season is here. The Gregg Co. Fair kicks off tomorrow, The East Texas Fair is right behind it, and before you know it, the State Fair of Texas will be in full swing. I'll be hanging out at the fairgrounds from 4-6, Saturday in Longview, and will be surrounded by the tantilizing smells of "fair food."

One of the most interesting things to come out of fair season is always the Big Tex Choice Awards, the annual fried-food contest hosted by the State Fair of Texas. Last year the Deep Fried Jambalaya took home the award for Most Creative, and the top prize for Best Taste went to the Fried Bacon Cinnamon Roll.

The Most Creative winner this year, Fried Thanksgving Dinner - Mama’s homemade stuffing and diced roasted turkey are rolled in a ball. Next it’s dipped in Southern cream corn, rolled in seasoned cornmeal and fried to a golden brown. Served with old-fashioned giblet brown gravy. The zesty orange cranberry sauce fills your dipping needs and results in a complete Thanksgiving dinner — fried. Sounds tasty, doesn't it?

The Best Taste award went to the Deep Fried Cuban Roll - A filling of slow-cooked pork
shoulder, chopped ham, Swiss cheese, pickles and secret sauce is spread onto a slice of
Swiss cheese, rolled up in pastry dough and deep fried. Roll is served with a side of mojo
sauce for dipping. Delicious.

I probably won't make to the State Fair of Texas this year to enjoy these amazing treats, but I know the funnel cake and corn dogs will be calling my name on Saturday. Which leaves me wondering, what's your favorite "fair food?"
