While law enforcement mourns the loss of one of their own, there is good news to report. A Federal K-9 Officer who was shot twice during the apprehension of the suspected murderer is expected to survive his injuries.
According to a report from FOX26 Houston, a law enforcement officer who was serving a warrant on Wednesday was shot in a parking lot on Stella Link Road, near the Loop 610 Intersection.
The suspect, identified as Robert Lee Davis, III, fled and a massive manhunt ensued. A statewide Blue Alert was also issued for tips on Davis' location.
The officer who was shot was identified as Jesus Jesse Vargas. It was confirmed Wednesday afternoon that he had passed away at a local hospital.
Vargas was a 17-year veteran of the Brazoria County Sheriff's Department. He was also part of the U.S. Marshal’s Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force.
Later Wednesday afternoon, officers returned to the area of the shooting as the hunt for Davis continued. A Federal K-9 Officer, Rocky, discovered the suspect hiding in a dumpster.
The K-9 was shot twice. The suspect reportedly opened fire on officers and was met with return fire. Davis died at the scene.
A 'life-flight' helicopter was called to the scene. Officers carried Rocky to the helicopter and he was transported to the Westbury Animal Clinic. The K-9 is expected to survive.
Police have praised Rocky because his actions likely saved the lives of others.
Please keep Deputy Vargas and his family and friends, Rocky and his handler, and all law enforcement and others involved in this tragedy in your prayers.
