Once upon a time, not all that long ago, being called a "nerd" or a "geek" was considered an insult. But, in today's world, it seems that everyone is a nerd or geek about something. Over the last 5 years or so, "Nerd Culture" has exploded!

I mean, I've always been big into comic books. And I remember that some folks viewed shopping at a comic shop the same as hitting a XXX store. But now, I run into all kinds of people in shops on new Comic Book Day - from doctors to lawyers to construction workers.

Everywhere you look - there's geeky stuff. And, everywhere you look, there's lots of people of all kinds openly into it. And it's great to see!

On Some Level, Everyone is a "Nerd' or 'Geek'

There's comic book stores, hobby shops, conventions, and card shops popping up everywhere. Baseball cards are cool again. Comic books are cool again. Magic is cool again. It's kind of awesome to see because there's a little something for everyone.

If you're into Dungeons & Dragons or table top games, there's a place for you. If you're super into sports, there's a spot for you. If you love comic books and super heroes, there's something for you.

Nerd culture is pretty much everywhere you look - even the mainstream. Annually, (generally speaking) the top grossing movies or most viewed streaming shows are either comic book or video game related.

Whether you've been buying your stuff online and would prefer to meet locals or are thinking about dipping your toes back into the world of comics, collectibles or games, believe or not, East Texas is a great place to be.

There are several high quality hobby shops of different kinds to choose - from stores that focus more on gaming to shops that lean more heavily on comic books or cards.

Some are in town, some are a short drive away. All are worth checking out!

  • The Chadderbox - If tabletop games or card games are your jam, the Chadderbox located in the Lufkin Mall is worth checking out. Yes, the sell comics, but the focus definitely seems to be on the gaming aspect - particularly Pokemon, Magic, and RPG games.
  • Grim's Fiction - Located in Nacogdoches, this may be the most unique shop on the list. Because this a bookstore...that just happens to be super Geeky. So, if you're a reader, this is the place to check out period. They do book signings and all kinds of cool stuff. Plus, they sell tons of comics and graphic novels. And offer tabletop gaming. So, yeah, a full service shop with tons of cool stuff.
  • Ground Zero Comics - Located in Tyler, Ground Zero is just what the name says - an old school, awesome comic book shop. Of course they sell other things like collectibles, cards, Tabletop game stuff etc., but their bread & butter are comics. Which, personally, is my jam. So, whether you want to pick up the latest run of Batman or find some books from the 60s, this is a place to check out.

I'm just highlighting those 3 shops, because those are the 3 I've personally dealt with before and have experience with. BUT, there are tons of other cool places worth checking out all over East Texas, Dallas, Shreveport, Texarkana...basically everywhere if you look hard enough.

The point of all this - if you're interested in comics, sports, card games, role playing games, or anything in between, there's definitely somewhere for you to go and learn and hangout and meet people.

And that's really what it's all about, community and camaraderie. Who knows...you may go in to one of these places to look around and end up in a new Fantasy Football league or playing Magic on Friday nights.
