(Mix 93-1) Vacationing and traveling are two of the best things in life.

Why Travel Matters

When working a full-time job, you earn paid time off along the way. Getting away from the daily tasks and grind is a way to reset, recharge, and rejuvenate your mind and body. Leaving the stress of the office behind for an extended period of time is rather liberating.

Our Dream Itinerary

My wife and I saved for many years to go on an extended trip of a lifetime. We crossed the Atlantic Ocean and went to visit Iceland, along with London, England, and Helsinki, Finland, during a couple of long layovers.

Our itinerary in Iceland was packed with things to do, like a Northern Lights tour, a whale watching tour, traveling to and visiting many waterfalls and beautiful black beaches, and exploring ice caves in one of Iceland's glaciers.

Unexpected Homesickness

While taking in the beauty of the island nation, nearly 4000 miles from East Texas, I realized I was missing some things from back home:

  • my pillow
  • my bed
  • my shower
  • and my dog!

Comforts I Missed Most

  • I missed my shower. Many of the shower heads were a bit shorter, and being a taller guy, I had a tough time getting all the shampoo out of my hair! Plus, the lack of water pressure, too!
  • I missed my bed. In many of the hotels we stayed in, a standard queen-sized bed was replaced with a couple of twin-size mattresses that were pretty soft. It's a personal thing, I know, but I prefer a firmer bed to get quality sleep!
  • I missed my pillow. I felt as if I were sitting straight up in the bed as I slept because the pillows were super thick. They were soft, but uncomfortable at the same time.
  • I missed my dog! This reason should be at the top of the list, honestly. Not being able to interact with her, throw her favorite toy across the room, and see that wagging tail and hear her bark when I walked in the door. I missed that on my vacation.

A Trip Worth Taking

It may sound like complaining, but I’m not. My wife and I had a phenomenal time on our trip of a lifetime. There were unforgettable views, experiences, and memories, and I could suffer through those four 'hardships' for some time away from my normal 'routine' with my wife.

I suggest saving and going on a trip of a lifetime with your family or spouse. It doesn't have to be as extravagant as our dream vacation, but make a plan to go somewhere to take in the sights and experiences for sure.
