How Long Texas Lets You Drive With Expired Registration
I’m pretty sure almost every Texan has asked themselves this at least once: How long can I actually drive with expired registration before it becomes a problem?
Maybe your sticker expired yesterday. Maybe it expired last month and you keep telling yourself you’ll handle it “this weekend.” Either way, you’re not alone, but Texas does have some pretty strict rules about it.
Here’s what you need to know, without the legal lecture.
The Grace Period Texas Gives You
Texas gives drivers a five-day grace period after their registration expires. During that time, law enforcement generally won’t stop you just for expired tags.
If you renew online through Texas.gov or Texas by Texas (TxT), you’ll get a receipt that lets you legally drive for up to 31 days while waiting for your sticker. Keep that receipt in your car.
What Happens After the Grace Period
Once those five days pass, driving with expired registration becomes a traffic violation.
That can mean:
- Fines up to $200
- Late fees when you renew
- Possible towing if other violations are involved
Will everyone get ticketed right away? No. But the longer you wait, the higher the risk.
How to Fix It Quickly
If you want this handled fast, you’ve got options:
- Renew online
- Visit your county tax office
- Use locations like AAA or select grocery stores
In many cases, you can get your sticker the same day.
If you’re cited, you may qualify for a compliance dismissal. Fix the registration, pay the required penalty and court fee, and show proof before your court date, and the ticket can often be dismissed.
Texas may be laid-back about a lot of things, but expired registration isn’t one of them. You get a short grace period, a little flexibility if you act fast, and then the fines start adding up.
If your sticker is expired- or close- this is probably your sign to take care of it now, before it turns into a bigger headache!
