(Mix 93-1) Normal things you see on the road may not appear as they seem.

If you see a Ford F-250 pulling a goose-neck flatbed trailer down a Texas highway with huge circular bales of hay ratcheted down, you'd think they were as dense and heavy as they looked and on the way to feed livestock on a farm in Texas.

Well, think again. In this case, the 'bales of hay' are the latest disguise used to smuggle people across the border and into Texas.

The Fayette County Sheriff's Office made a traffic stop on a vehicle for an unknown reason Tuesday afternoon on I-10. While approaching the vehicle, the deputy noticed something was a bit different with the bales of hay that were being transported.

After closer inspection, the deputy discovered the hay bales had been hollowed out to create a compartment to conceal people for smuggling.

After opening one of the hay bales, sheriff's deputies discovered 12 undocumented migrants. These people were detained and turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for processing.

Two people were charged with human smuggling

Authorities arrested two individuals who seemed to be in charge of the operation:

  • 22-year-old Adanaylo Lambert, Houston
  • 25-year-old Lency Delgado Fernandez, Houston

These individuals are now facing federal and state human smuggling charges. The driver of the truck, 44-year-old Delbert Flanders of Kansas, was transported to the hospital for a medical condition.

The bales of hay used to conceal the undocumented migrants had been created out of a wire framework that was covered in layers of hay, making it look unsuspecting. Smugglers will go to great lengths to get people across the border, and oftentimes without any regard to the lives they are smuggling. To them, they are just a dollar sign.
