Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, who've been married since 2000, are "taking a break" from each other, sources report.

People reports that the couple has vacationed separately with their kids (Dylan, 13, and Carys, 10) and walked red carpets alone, and they haven't been photographed together in several months.

"They're taking a break," an insider said, adding that the stress from their respective medical battles -- Zeta-Jones has publicly struggled with bipolar disorder and Douglas fought off questionably-obtained cancer in 2010 -- has "taken a toll on their marriage."

That said, Douglas, 68, and Zeta-Jones, 43, haven't filed for divorce or even a legal separation, so their friends and family maintain hope that they can work things out.

"They want the best for their kids, no matter what happens," a pal said.
