Why East Texans Need to Be Hurricane Ready This Year
(Mix 93-1) Tyler and Longview, Texas, may be far from the Texas Gulf coast, but that doesn't mean we aren't in the reach of a powerful hurricane if it were to move ashore and head north.
East Texas and Deep East Texas have seen their fair share of hurricanes and hurricane remnants move overhead that have caused significant damage and flooding throughout the years.
While the damage isn't as bad as it gets along the coast, torrential downpours are enough to cause flooding issues around the area.
The 2025 hurricane season for the Atlantic basin is about to ramp up. According to forecasts, meteorologists may have their hands full this summer when it comes to tracking these hurricanes and their storm tracks.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1st through November 30th
Thanks to warmer water temperatures, NOAA predicts this is going to be one active season with at least six to 10 hurricanes, with three to five of them reaching major hurricane status. A major hurricane is a category 3 storm or higher on the Saffir-Simpson scale, meaning a category 3 storm has wind speeds of at least 111 miles per hour.

In addition to the high number of predicted hurricanes, the agency predicts there will be anywhere from 13 to 19 named storms, including tropical storms, to form in the Atlantic Ocean with some having the potential to move into the Gulf of Mexico - or Gulf of America, whatever we're calling it these days - depending upon its path.
The Atlantic hurricane season usually produces 14 named storms and three major hurricanes each year. So these predictions are in line with the average, but appear to be higher than normal.
Peak hurricane activity typically occurs from mid-August through mid-October.
Residents need to make preparations now
While all is calm now, residents should reevaluate their emergency hurricane plans. If evacuation orders are issued, know your evacuation route. Have all important documents, medications, and a quick overnight bag packed.
Other things to have on hand, at least one gallon of water per person for several days, non-perishable food, a first aid kit, batteries, a flashlight, a radio, a whistle, and a manual can opener. You'll need food for any pets, too.
Ready.gov is full of other helpful tips and suggestions when it comes to being prepared for the arrival of a hurricane.
When it comes to tropical storms and hurricanes, you'll want to be alert to the storm's intensity, strength, and path and make your exit strategy in plenty of time before it makes landfall.
