It’s normally one of the best meteor showers of the year, but this year it might be a little difficult to see some of the meteors from the Perseid meteor shower.

The Perseid meteor shower peaks the nights of August 11, 12, and 13. These meteors radiate from their radiant point in the night sky, and for the Perseids, that’s in the northeast sky. All of them coming from the constellation Perseus.

Now, normally you might see 50 to 75 meteors if conditions were perfect. Well first off, they never are perfect. Second, this year it’s going to be even harder to see them because of a bright moon.

The moon will be 92 percent full on August 12, meaning it’s going to be adding a lot of light to the night sky. This will make it harder to see meteors. However, if you adjust the time you’re heading outside to see the meteors, you should be able to see some.

Normally the best time to check out meteor showers is after midnight because the radiant point tends to be higher in the night sky. But with us having a big bright moon to deal with, it’s actually best to wait until before sunrise.

On August 12, the moon will be setting at 4:01 a.m. The sun is set to rise at 6:43 a.m., but the sky will start to bright up about an hour before. So the ideal time to see this meteor shower will be after 4:00 a.m. and before 5:30 a.m.
