Texas Pastor Makes National Headlines for ‘We Will Burn’ Comments [Update]
Texas Pastor Rick Scarborough is literally in the hot seat after he said he would be willing to be burned in his fight against gay rights.
The Pearland, Texas native said in an interview: "We are not going to bow, we are not going to bend, and if necessary we will burn."
Scarborough did not expound on his comments to clarify if he meant it literally or figuratively. However, Scarborough issued a statement to KFYO News Friday afternoon explaining the remark.
"I made that comment to paraphrase a spiritual song, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in which the three were given a choice—to bow to the image of Nebucahdnezzar or burn in a furnace," said Scarborough."‘We will burn' means that we will accept any sanction from the government for resisting today's Supreme Court decision. We do not support any violence or physical harm."
The statement aired on right-wing minister EW Jackson's National Emergency Coalition podcast.
The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 Friday (June 26) that same-sex couples can now marry nationwide.
Scarborough also operates Vision America. According to the group's website, its mission is "to inform, encourage and mobilize pastors and their congregations to be proactive in restoring Judeo-Christian values to the moral and civic framework in their communities, states, and our nation."
