The Texas panhandle is in store for very chilly weather. Snow is even supposedly in the forecast for some areas. With the cold setting in, you might be tempted to run outside and start your car in the morning so it will be warm and toasty when you head to work. You should know all the different ways that this is a horrible idea.

Why You Shouldn't Leave Your Car Running In The Mornings

First, in Texas, it's illegal. It's true. You can find yourself running afoul of the law if you leave your vehicle running and unattended. It's in the Texas Transportation Code. The only way you can leave your car running without being with it is if you have a remote start or something similar.

Not only is it illegal, but it also is like painting a big neon sign on the side of your vehicle screaming "Steal Me!" The keys are inside, the vehicle is running, and it's easy for thieves to make off with your wheels. Nothing is worse than being stuck without a ride in Texas panhandle winter weather.

What To Do In The Mornings Instead Of Leaving Your Car Running

You could always throw on a couple extra layers, grab a thermos full of coffee, and sit in your car while it warms up. If the Good Lord has financially blessed you in this tough economy, you could run out and get a remote start installed in your vehicle. Then you can sit in your bathrobe and sip your coffee indoors while your car warms up.

If you have a garage, park your vehicle inside. In the morning, it won't take as long for your vehicle to warm up, and you won't have all of that annoying frost on your windshield. Hop in, start your engine, and give it a minute or two before you're on your way.

Now that the cold weather is officially here, do what you can to protect your vehicle and not find yourself in legal trouble.
