Shocking! What Essential Thanksgiving Food do We Omit?
This one might come as a shocker, but in reality I have found more people who also do this.
My family does not eat turkey on Thanksgiving. There I said it. Are you shocked?
I’m not even sure I noticed it was missing as a child. My parents divorced when I was nine and my brother was seven. We gained new parents within a year, and our family holidays started to look a little different.
Like most kids we traded holidays. If we went to Dad’s house for Christmas that year we stayed with mom for Thanksgiving. Despite the initial challenges most families face, I found I gained a whole new group of people to love and who loved us.
It did mean that holiday meals looked different though. My step-mom does cook turkey. She’s a great cook and she has enough food each year to feed an army. My step-sisters also cook and this side of my family is a large and growing number. It’s wonderful.
My step-dad’s family is a little different. He is the cook in the family and this is my non-turkey dinner. There are six things prepared every year. The same six… we don’t waver, and then usually there’s a pie. So what does cook? Here’s his menu:
- Chicken and Dressing
- Ham
- Mashed Potato Salad
- Baked Beans
- Deviled Eggs
- Dinner Rolls
It’s simple and flavorful, and we love it. My husband enjoyed Thanksgiving with us for the first time when we were dating 10 years ago, and he’s come back for this meal each year and looks forward to it.
We eat early there. Dinner time is at 11:00 a.m. and no one is late. Our Thanksgiving may look a little different than yours, but I wish you a very blessed one none the less!
