The seldom-used Social Security Administration (SSA) hearings office in Nacogdoches is closing, and its lease has been terminated. The University Plaza office hosted appeal hearings for Social Security cases.

According to the Lufkin Daily News, the action is related to federal downsizing led by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). This closure comes with savings of $86,414. The terms are unclear, so there is no way to know how those savings are calculated.

This branch in Nacogdoches was rarely staffed, and the employees primarily worked out of the Lufkin branch already. This was the final step in a relocation program started almost 15 years ago.

The move to consolidate services began back in 2007, and now the closest Social Security Branch to Nacogdoches is in Lufkin at 702 East Denman Avenue. With the transition already being made and a nationwide effort to close 10 SSA offices in place, it was an easy decision.

The Social Security agency is downsizing, but benefits will not be affected. They're also looking to eliminate 41 SSA jobs nationwide.

Experts warn that these changes could lead to longer wait times and more errors in case rulings. SSA disability hearings are already suffering from a case backlog, with many waiting over a year for a ruling.

Social Security Should Be Growing, Not Shrinking
