Somewhere between Thanksgiving and right after Christmas, our thoughts turn to the New Year. There have been several New Year's Days where I find myself sitting at home, thinking there's probably something more active or unique I could be doing other than lazing about. To be clear, a bit of lazing about is always nice around the holidays, but there is a point of diminishing returns when I just want to get outside, maybe take a walk, and work off some some of the holiday weight I've probably accumulated.

Tyler State Park is hosting the "First Day Hike: Birding the Lakeshore" around Tyler State Park Lake, from 9 a.m. to noon. Trek the outdoors, learn more about our East Texas birds, and take in some fresh air. You are encouraged to bring binoculars, if you have them. There will be a couple of pair that may be borrowed, but there are no guarantees. Due to the nature of the hike, they're asking you leave your pets at home and just enjoy a 2 mile walk through the beautiful Tyler State Park. With your paid admission to the park, the hike itself is free.

How nice would it be to start 2019 off on the right foot--literally? (Or the left...let's not get too technical.) ;)
