ALERT: FDA Recalls Popular Spice Sold in Texas
Bad news for those of us in Texas who love to use a dash of cinnamon in our favorite treats!
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recalled six brands of ground cinnamon sold in Texas stores due to elevated levels of lead!
Which Ground Cinnamon Brands Are Under Recall?
Cinnamon products included in the agency’s safety alert include:
- La Fiesta brand sold by La Superior and SuperMercados
- Marcum brand sold by Save A Lot stores
- MK brands sold by SF Supermarket
- Swad brand sold by Patel Brothers
- El Chilar brand sold by La Joya Morelense
- Supreme Tradition brand sold by Dollar Tree and Family Dollar stores.
Here is a quick look at what these brands look like:
So check your pantry right now and immediately throw these out if you have them!
For the most part, stores have already removed these brands from shelves; in fact, a company spokesperson for Dollar Tree and Family Dollar stores say they not only removed the cinnamon from their shelves, but customers can also return the products to a nearby store for a full refund.
This recall comes on the heels of a different recall; a few months ago, the FDA recalled popular apple sauce pouches also due to a lead-contamination. Unfortunately, that apple sauce contamination did affect about 500 U.S. children. Because of that recall, FDA officials were prompted to launch a “targeted survey” of cinnamon products sold in discount stores.
The FDA did report that the levels of lead in the cinnamon products were significantly lower than the levels seen in the applesauce packs, but the risk of contamination is still a problem. So check your pantry, and throw out these products if you have them!
