Tolkienites will find themselves in luck today — Amazon Studios has ordered a second season of its The Lord of the Ringsbased TV series before the first episode is even released. According to DeadlineAmazon Studios head Jennifer Salke confirmed that the second season of LOTR is “already in the works”.

In addition to this news, it was also announced that there will be a 4-5 month hiatus between filming of the first two episodes and the rest of Season 1. During this time, showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay will work with their writing team to plot out Season 2. While it’s not uncommon to have a small break after the first few episodes of a show, this seems like an especially large chunk of time to take off mid-season. There seems to be a priority on filming Seasons 1 and 2 as close together as possible, most likely for more consistency between the two. On the bright side, this break will also potentially reduce the gap of time between each season’s release.

Similar to Disney+‘s The Mandalorian, the show will take place in the same cinematic universe as its source material. It’s a prologue of sorts set in Middle Earth, exploring the events that lead up to J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring. Although yet to be made official, the series will allegedly star Will Poulter (Midsommar, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch), Joseph Mawle (Game of Thrones), and Markella Kavenagh. J.A. Bayona, known for his work on Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, will direct the first two episodes that film before the hiatus.
