Texas drivers are being targeted by a new phishing scam aimed at those who use TxTag, a convenient method of paying tolls across Texas and a few other states.

El Paso drivers don't really need TxTag these days as our toll roads currently don't charge. Across the rest of Texas though ... along with Colorado, Kansas, and Oklahoma ... it's a handy way to deal with tollway charges.

You open an account, put on the TxTag and whenever you use a toll road; the fee is deducted automatically from your account. This is where the scam kicks in ...

More and more TxTag users have been getting messages saying they have a balance either due or past due. The message has a website that looks like a legit, Texas state website and when you click on it; the phisher bastards get 'ya.

See an example message here.

While TxTag currently communicates with customers via email, text and outbound phone calls, it will not send text messages regarding final payment reminders or past due balances. Any text messages sent to TxTag customers will be sent from 22498.

TxDOT asks TxTag customers to be vigilant of these ongoing scams and contact TxTag Customer Service directly at textag or by calling 1-888-468-9824, should customers receive an unsolicited text, email or message purporting to be from TxTag or another toll agency. - txdot.gov

If you think you are being scammed let them know and, remember ... as stated above ... TxDoT will NOT send text messages regarding final payment reminders or past due balances.  For more info, click here.
